In 2017, CFUW St Catharines  donated $2000 towards the United Way – CFUW Hygiene Kits initiative which will provide kits for women in shelters and those moving out of crisis shelters. Hygiene products are often overlooked as donations to shelters, food banks and other organizations. For women living in poverty, affording every day essentials can be a real challenge, and for women who are experiencing homelessness, it is an even greater challenge.  The United Way Hygiene Kits will respond to some of the need that has been identified in our community.  The hygiene kits will include: shampoo, conditioner, soap, wash cloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and other miscellaneous hygiene items. All members are invited to attend packing parties to assemble the hygiene kits. Karen MacKay, Heidi Burgess and Anita Robertson will organize these parties throughout the year.  If you are interested in assisting, please contact Anita or sign up at the September meeting. Contact Anita Robertson

In December 2017, we successfully packed 100 Hygiene Kits before Christmas which were distributed to those in need throughout the community.

In addition, on March 6, 2018 United Way’s across our country are reaching out into their communities to help women from coast to coast by hosting Tampon Tuesday Events.  This grassroots movement began in 2009 after Mandi Fields toured a food bank in London, Ontario and discovered an empty shelf in the non-food cupboard.  Knowing the cost of feminine hygiene products and their importance to women’s health and dignity, she wanted to do something about it so she launched the first Tampon Tuesday.  From 2009 it has slowly grown and last year St. Catharines hosted its’ first ever Tampon Tuesday.  This year our local United Way will host its’ second Tampon Tuesday Event on Tuesday, March 6th from 5-7pm at The Feathery Pub located at 420 Vansickle Road (beside Starbuck’s).  It is a unique way to gather with women in our community to network, socialize and go with the flow.  The cost of of admission is (1) box or bag of menstrual feminine hygiene products.
